La globalización de la economía mundial ha determinado cambios importantes en el flujo y composición de los movimientos migratorios, especialmente los que suceden en la región de América Latina y El Caribe (ALC). Si bien, históricamente la región de ALC representaba un campo de atracción de inmigrantes provenientes de diversas continentes del mundo, desde la recuperación económica de Europa y el establecimiento de estrechas relaciones políticas, económicas y comerciales con Estados Unidos, se observan cambios en la orientación de los flujos migratorios, transformando a la región LAC en un lugar de emigración.
